Did you know that the UN seeks to cover the rights of indigenous peoples? Indeed, since 1994, the 9th of August has marked the celebration of world’s indigenous peoples, their cultures, languages and ways of life, and has raised greater awareness to the issues they face. As indigenous people cover only about 5 % of the world’s population but account for 15 % of the poorest, international cooperation can help strengthen the development of their lives in many areas.

In Europe the only remaining indigenous people are the Sami people living in the Nordic countries and Russia. The ILO 169 convention, which is the major binding international convention concerning the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples, was established in 1989. The unfortunate fact is that Finland still hasn’t ratified the convention. Ratifying the convention would guarantee the Sami people their right to traditional lands, territories and natural resources.

🏳️‍🌈 All human beings are born equal!

Unfortunately this is still not the case in many countries around the world.
Even though Finland is doing relatively well on LGBTQ+ rights, there are still issues to tackle such as discrimination of transgendered, prejudice and bullying.

Below you can also see some of the most important changes in Finland regarding LGBTQ+ rights:

1971 Homosexual acts were decriminalized; however encouraging one to do so was still illegal.

1981 Homosexuality was removed from the list of deseases.

2014 Same-sex marriage became legal.

Today around the world 72 jurisdictions criminalise private, consensual, same-sex sexual activity. In 12 of these the punishment is death.

There is a lot to do and to work on in every single jurisdiction, even though the map by Washington Post (2016) doesn’t indicate that; something being decriminalized doesn’t mean the problems are solved.

Pride is to promote the equality of all people and to spread understanding of these issues here in Finland and around the world.

TAYK wishes everyone happy and equal pride! 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇳
